U.S. and Israel Launch Major Strikes on Iran, Trigger Retaliatory Attacks

The United States and Israel have carried out coordinated military strikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran, in what both nations describe as a pre-emptive effort to neutralise perceived threats from Tehran’s nuclear and military programmes. The attacks part of a campaign identified by Israel as Operation Lion’s Roar mark a major escalation in regional tensions and have drawn swift retaliation.

The strikes, which began in the early hours of Saturday morning, saw explosions reported across Tehran and other Iranian cities as air force and missile strikes targeted military installations, defence infrastructure, and sites linked to the Iranian leadership. Iran’s official media reported powerful blasts in several urban areas and confirmed that both Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian were safe.

Speaking in a video message, U.S. President Donald Trump said the operation was intended to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats” from the Iranian regime. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the joint action as a necessary measure to remove what he characterised as an existential danger, saying it would “create the conditions” for political change in Iran.

Retaliation Across the Region

Iran responded swiftly, with its Revolutionary Guard announcing missile and drone attacks on Israel and U.S. military bases in the Middle East. Explosions have been reported in countries hosting U.S. forces including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates signalling a rapid and widespread escalation of hostilities.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as violations of its sovereignty and a breach of the United Nations Charter, pledging a “decisive and determining” response. Officials called on the UN Security Council to intervene and urged member states to condemn what they termed “aggressors” in Washington and Tel Aviv.

Casualties and Damage Reports

Independent verification of casualties remains difficult amid conflicting reports. Iranian health officials cited by state media claimed that strikes hit schools and residential areas, resulting in civilian deaths, including children, though such claims could not be independently confirmed. Israeli officials have so far focused on military objectives.

Diplomatic Fallout and Global Responses

The joint strikes have elicited a range of international reactions. Russia condemned the operation as an unprovoked act of armed aggression, warning that it could lead to humanitarian and economic disasters while emphasising its willingness to mediate peace.

The European Union urged restraint and respect for international law, while Gulf states grapple with the implications for regional security. Several countries have called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting amid fears the conflict could broaden beyond the current theatres of combat.

Wider Strategic Implications

The U.S. military had been conducting its largest build-up in the Middle East since early January, deploying additional carrier strike groups and defence assets amid rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and domestic unrest. Analysts warn that the combined strikes and battlefield retaliation could draw the region into sustained conflict.

Political dynamics in global capitals now hinge on whether the conflict will deepen or spur last-ditch diplomatic efforts, with many nations urging de-escalation to prevent what one international observer described as “a dangerous chain reaction” of violence.

What Comes Next

As the situation continues to evolve, observers are watching for potential negotiations through diplomatic channels even as military actions intensify. The coming days will likely shape Middle Eastern geopolitics and broader global security dynamics including reactions from neighbouring states and multilateral institutions.

This is a developing story.
