Moderate Earthquake Recorded Offshore

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Jamaica in the early hours of Tuesday, sending tremors across the island’s eastern parishes, according to data from the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona. The quake occurred at approximately 3:18 a.m. local time and was centred offshore near Portland Parish at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres.

The tremor was widely felt by residents who were awakened by shaking and rattling windows in parts of eastern and central Jamaica, though there have been no immediate reports of injuries, structural damage, or tsunami threat following the event.

Public Reports of Shaking Across Several Parishes

Social-media users described brief but noticeable shaking in communities spanning eastern parishes, with some residents saying the tremor lasted several seconds.

One person posted that the quake “woke me right up,” while another shared online that items on shelves had vibrated during the event. Although there were no official reports of damage, the strong sensation prompted discussions on preparedness among users.

Officials with the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center — which monitors Caribbean seismic activity — confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued in connection with the tremor.

Jamaica’s Seismic Context

Jamaica lies along the boundary of the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates, making it susceptible to periodic earthquakes, even those centred offshore. Moderate quakes — generally defined as magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 — are occasionally felt but often do not produce significant damage when centred away from the coastline.

Historically, Jamaica has recorded a number of felt earthquakes in the 5-magnitude range. While most recent events have not caused widespread damage, larger historic quakes have had significant impacts, underscoring the importance of preparedness among residents and authorities alike.

Authorities and Preparedness Reminders

The Earthquake Unit and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) continue to monitor seismic activity and are expected to release detailed technical assessments in the coming days.

Officials remind the public that even moderate earthquakes can be startling and emphasise steps families should take to prepare for larger events, including identifying safe spaces in homes, securing heavy furniture, and having emergency supplies accessible.

Residents are also encouraged to report quake effects — such as items displaced or cracks in walls — to local parish offices, which help authorities assess broader impact patterns once detailed data become available.

No Immediate Reports of Harm

At this stage, emergency services have not confirmed any injuries or significant structural damage related to the quake. Roads, utilities, and essential services appear to be operating normally following the early-morning event.

Further updates will be provided as more information is verified.

This is a developing story.
