Jamaica Hit by Minor Earthquake

Minor Earthquake Felt Across Parts of Jamaica

Jamaica experienced a minor earthquake on Thursday, prompting reports of brief shaking from residents in several parishes. The tremor was felt in sections of the Kingston Metropolitan Area and nearby communities, according to initial accounts.

The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, confirmed that seismic activity was recorded, though officials stressed that the quake was low in magnitude and not considered dangerous.

As of Thursday evening, there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage linked to the tremor.

Residents Describe Sudden Shaking

Several residents took to social media shortly after the quake, describing a quick jolt or vibration that lasted a few seconds.

“It felt like the ground shook and then it was gone,” one Kingston resident said. Others reported hearing windows rattle or feeling furniture move slightly.

Emergency authorities say such reactions are typical during shallow, low-level earthquakes.

Authorities Monitoring Situation

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) said it is monitoring the situation closely but has not activated emergency response protocols.

“Based on preliminary information, this was a minor event,” an ODPEM official said. “However, we encourage the public to remain calm and report any damage to local authorities.”

The Earthquake Unit is expected to release more detailed information, including the exact magnitude and epicentre, following further analysis.

Jamaica Remains Seismically Active

Jamaica lies along the boundary of the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates, making it prone to occasional seismic activity. Most earthquakes recorded locally are minor and cause little to no damage.

Experts continue to urge residents to practice basic earthquake safety measures, such as securing heavy furniture and knowing safe spots within homes and workplaces.

Public Urged to Stay Informed

Authorities are reminding citizens to rely on official sources for updates and to avoid spreading unverified information, particularly on social media.

Further details will be provided once technical assessments are completed.
